Bendigo Winter Night Shelter will operate every night during winter, and we require teams of volunteers at our sleeping venues. There are many different roles, both interacting with our guests and supporting behind the scenes.


Roles that you can volunteer for are:

1) Shift Leader

2) Shift Worker

3) Cook / Kitchen Hand

4) Driver

5) Guest Meeting Point Host


Meals are catered for both guests and volunteers with dinner and breakfast being shared together.

Night owls and early risers are always especially needed.


Volunteer Roles

Shift Leader

  • Allocating jobs to volunteers.

  • Making key decisions when other volunteers are unsure of the best course of action.

  • Supporting volunteers where necessary in responding to guests.

  • Arrange handover between shift leaders.

  • Liaising with Venue Coordinator and/or Project Coordinator if necessary.

  • Maintaining the Bendigo Winter Night Shelter Logbook. All volunteers and guests must be signed in and out and all incidents must be logged.

Volunteers can choose one of three shifts every day:

i) evening from 5:30pm - 10pm

ii) night from 10pm - 6am (volunteers are needed most for this shift)

iii) morning from 6am - 8:30am

Shift Worker

  • Engaging with, supporting and helping guests feel welcome.

  • Familiarise new guests with venue facilities.

  • Assist in preparation of meal and drinks.

  • Take responsibility of health, safety and welfare of self and others.

  • Be aware of and assist in evacuation procedures if required.

  • Follow the instruction of the Shift Leader and report to them any incidents as soon as possible.

  • Assist in set up and tear down of venue.

  • Assist in cleaning the venue before and after guests have attended.

Volunteers can choose one of three shifts every day:

i) evening from 5:30pm - 10pm

ii) night from 10pm - 6am (volunteers are needed most for this shift)

iii) morning from 6am - 8:30am


Cook / Kitchen Hand

The evening meal will be served at 7:00 PM. Numbers will be confirmed to the Venue Coordinator each morning. Food supplies will be organised in consultation with the Venue Coordinator and, if necessary, the Volunteer Coordinator.

  • Prepare/cook a healthy meal for guests and volunteers.

  • Follow the Food Hygiene Policy and procedures.

  • Guests and volunteers are responsible for cleaning up.

Once the kitchen is cleaned, you have the option of leaving the Shelter or staying on to be with the guests (the Venue Coordinator will assess if this is appropriate regarding the guest/volunteer ratio).

Shift is expected to be from 5:30pm-8.30pm.



There are two roles for drivers:

Minibus driver

  • In the evening at about 6pm, pick up guests from the guest meeting point and drive them to the sleeping venue.

  • In the morning at about 7.30am, pick up guests from the sleeping venue and drive them to the guest meeting point.

  • Drivers must be able to drive a manual transmission.

  • Drivers may volunteer for either the evening or morning pick up or both.

Equipment trailer

  • At some point between 9am and 5pm move the trailer from one sleeping venue to the next. 

  • Drivers moving the trailer will need to have a tow bar and be willing to use their own vehicle.

Guest Meeting Point Host

This role will be undertaken with the Bendigo Winter Night Shelter (BWNS) Project Coordinator (or their delegate).

  • With the BWNS Project Coordinator meet and greet guests at a pre-designated Bendigo city centre meeting point.

  • Engaging with, supporting and helping guests to feel welcome.


Shift is expected to be In the afternoons from 4pm-6:30pm
