The department of health and human services have a free non-accredited online learning resource to enable you to understand how to safely work with food. Topics covered include:

Personal hygiene.
Food handling.
Food contamination.
Food delivery, storage and display.
Cleaning and sanitizing.
Food allergens.
If you are on a cooking / food assist roster this is helpful to do and you can print a certificate at the end that shows you completed the training.
It is not compulsory but is beneficial.
